ABOUT

Initiate Dance aims to provide a safe, fun and enjoyable environments for people in our communities to learn, create and share dance.

Initiate Dance is a community dance initiative founded by Dr Kristie Mortimer, who aims to provide accessible and inclusive dance activities.

Initiate Dance has been running programmes since 2015. Initiate Dance Holiday Programmes continue to run thanks to Auckland Council's Creative Community Scheme funding.

The Dancing in Confinement community dance resource has been created as part of the Caroline Plummer Fellowship in Community Dance 2020 at the University of Otago.

Growing up in Blenheim, New Zealand, Kristie began dancing from the age of seven, and was teaching classes by the time she was fifteen. She moved to Auckland in 2010 to study a Bachelor of Dance Studies at the University of Auckland, and has recently completed her PhD in Dance Studies. Kristie also completed her Postgraduate Diploma and Masters in Dance Studies, which included one semester on exchange at Roehampton University in London.

Most recently she has been awarded the Caroline Plummer Fellowship in Community Dance for 2020, at the University of Otago. Through this Kristie provided community dance classes for prisoners, adults and children in the Otago community.

Kristie has learned, performed and taught throughout New Zealand, and internationally in countries such as Australia, London, Singapore and Tonga. Her research explores cultural difference and Eurocentrism in dance education, and community dance practice in prisons.

Kristie is passionate about teaching and facilitating dance in our communities, and is eager to make dance accessible to diverse groups of people.
